Pointless Ramblings

By Nick Barrett

It's quite surprising how hard adjusting to 'normal' life is again. I've come to realize the people I lived with for 8 months were more than friends, it's a different type of relationship entirely.
I've decided I hate big monolithic forums, I'd much rather be part of a smaller community.
I miss Banff.

Beautiful Dev Environment

So I've just setup what I believe to be the perfect dev environment when working on one website:

  • 1. Set my document root to the project root
    2. Added "127.0.0.1 modoutlet.com" to windows/system32/etc/drivers/hosts
  • So now, when I visit modoutlet.com, I get my local copy of the site exactly as it'll be setup when live. Perfect :)

iPhone 4 Flashlight to kill Flashlight Apps?

I was looking at the new iPhone site, because, well, I seriously want one. Anyway, I was reading down about the LED flash light, and it came to my mind one of my favorite apps is the flashlight app, surly this will kill it, since there will be no need? Not that it matters, just a thought.

Dark Side of the Moon Remake

So I only just learnt about the Dark Side of the Moon (possibly my favorite album of all time) remake by The Flaming Lips & various featuring artists. I have to say, as a modern interpretation of the original, I love it; though some of the songs don't quite feel right sometimes. I guess the original is simply too amazing to 'beat'.

Still, a wonderful album, worth listening to.

1.5 Months Remain

After that period, I will return to the UK from Canada. I'm looking forward to the return, but at the same time I know I'll desperately miss all the awesome people I've met out here.

Why the iPad has already won

Although the WeTab (and some others) look pretty awesome, I don't believe they can beat the iPad for one reason: the App Store. None of these devices will have anywhere near the number of apps. Even if they do run Android, it's a mobile OS 'forced' into a tablet setting. Of course, this could be said about the iPhone OS, but I believe that the subtle changes have made it perfect for a tablet, unlike any Android modifications I've seen so far.

The only reason I'm ranting on about this is because I've been seriously considering getting an iPad when it comes out in Canada (probably still will), but decided to check out the alternatives, but I've come to the realization there are no decent alternatives yet.

How to deal with registration

Do we require an email?
Do they need a username, or will email work?
Should we let them pick a password on signup, and send an activation link via email, or simply email them the password?
Registration forms should be as simple as possible, the most simple way would be to just have email then? Login with the email/password sent via email.
Or, have them not even need an email, just a username & password, then how do you deal with spam...

Posterous

So, I finally decided to do something with this domain, and here it is. I'm using posterous.com for the first time, and it's awesome. I love just being able to email my silly pointless posts in and having it automatically appear. Sexy.
